Liberty Jones Planters is a workshop based in Bend, Oregon dedicated to building permanent garden structures from real materials.

We focus on durability, material integrity, and precise construction.

Products should be built to last.

We believe the future isn’t disposable. It’s thoughtful, It’s durable, It’s rooted in real materials and real use.

Finished with Plant-safe Formula J

We build permanent garden structures from real materials.

We focus on durability, material integrity, and precise construction. Every planter is designed, machined, and finished to remain in service for decades. When something is made well, you feel it. You care for it differently. You trust it. It earns its place in your home. Everyone deserves access to that kind of craft, things made with attention, meant to last, not designed to be replaced.

There is nothing like harvesting something you grew yourself.

A tomato picked at the right moment. A potato pulled from the soil. The flavor alone is enough to remind you how far removed store-bought food has become. But the benefits go far beyond taste. Growing food connects you to the land, your body, and the systems that keep you alive. It’s grounding. It’s healthy. It’s empowering.

For us, gardening isn’t about trends, looks, or lifestyle signaling. It’s about relationship. Plants are living systems. How they’re treated matters. The environment they’re placed in matters. Care compounds over time. A planter isn’t just a container. It sets the conditions for roots, moisture, airflow, and stability. When those conditions are right, plants grow stronger. The food they produce feels different. Not just in flavor, but in how your body responds to it.

Materials and Processes

Our approach to materials comes from paying attention. Watching how wood moves. How water behaves. How heat, cold, and time actually affect things outside. We test. We adjust. We design for reality, not ideal conditions. Nothing is added without a reason. Nothing is decorative just to be decorative.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a Liberty Jones Planter last?
Liberty Jones Planters are engineered to remain in service for decades. We use Western Red Cedar and Incense Cedar, two species naturally resistant to rot and environmental degradation. Every planter is further protected with Formula J™, our proprietary penetrating wood protection system, which stabilizes the wood and protects it from moisture and UV exposure. Your planter will remain structurally sound for a lifetime with the proper, minimal, care.
How long does assembly take?
Most planters assemble in under 10 minutes. Each component is precision machined to fit exactly. There is no measuring, cutting, or modification required. Simply align the connectors and join the walls. The system was designed to eliminate complexity while increasing structural strength.
Do the planters require tools to assemble?
Minimal tools are required. All structural components are precision machined and designed for simple assembly. No cutting, drilling, or modification is necessary.
Can the planter be expanded later?
Yes. All Liberty Jones Planters are part of the Liberty System™, a modular architecture that allows expansion, reconfiguration, and extension without replacing the original structure. This ensures the planter remains usable as your garden evolves.
What is Formula J™?
Formula J™ is a plant-safe wood protection system developed specifically to preserve natural wood in outdoor environments. Developed, manufactured, and applied in houseIt penetrates deep into the wood fibers, stabilizing the structure and protecting against moisture, UV exposure, and environmental wear. Unlike surface coatings that crack and fail, Formula J™ protects from within.
Is Formula J™ safe for plants and soil?
Yes! Formula J™ is plant-safe and designed specifically for use in garden environments. It contains no toxic sealers or harmful surface coatings. Protecting the wood without contaminating soil or affecting plant health.
Do I need to reapply Formula J™?
Formula J™ provides long-term protection, but periodic reapplication every 1–2 years can extend protection and preserve appearance even further. Reapplication is simple and requires only a clean surface and light coat.
Why use cedar instead of other woods?
Western Red Cedar and Incense Cedar are naturally resistant to rot, moisture, and insects. They remain stable outdoors and perform significantly better than pine or other commonly used woods. These species were selected specifically for long-term outdoor structural performance.
What happens as the wood ages?
Wood naturally develops character over time. Formula J™ stabilizes the wood and slows degradation while allowing it to age naturally. Periodic maintenance can preserve the original appearance if desired, but structural integrity remains intact regardless.
Will the planter rot?
No wood product lasts forever without protection. However, Liberty Jones Planters are designed to dramatically resist rot and degradation. The combination of naturally rot-resistant cedar and deep penetrating Formula J™ protection allows the structure to remain intact and functional for decades. This is a permanent structure, not a temporary garden product.
